What are the benefits of massage therapy?

Massage therapy can support relaxation and may help some people ease muscle tension. The effect varies by person, context and massage style. A session is not a substitute for medical assessment or treatment.
What the research can support
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health reports that massage may offer short-term relief for some neck or shoulder pain. It also notes that many studies are low quality or too different from one another to support a promised outcome.
Relaxation and muscle tension
Pace, pressure and positioning shape the experience. Some people mainly want a quiet pause. Others want the session to focus on areas that feel tense after work or physical activity.
A Swedish massage generally uses flowing movements with adjustable intensity. A deep tissue massage uses more sustained pressure and is not automatically right for everyone. More pressure does not guarantee a better result.
Choosing an approach
Start by describing your goal, any sensitive areas and the pressure you prefer. Mention any injury, recent procedure, pregnancy or health condition that could change how the session is planned.
The list of massage techniques explains the general intent of each approach. Your final choice should feel comfortable and remain adjustable throughout the appointment.
When to seek medical advice
Sudden, severe or persistent pain, or pain accompanied by other symptoms, calls for professional advice. Ask a healthcare professional before massage when a health condition creates uncertainty. Do not delay medical care to try a complementary approach.
